Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a safe, effective, non-invasive technique for alleviating pain, reducing stress, and improving your overall health and wellbeing. Used as an effective healthcare technique for centuries, acupuncture has historically combining spiritual claims with observable benefits.

In ancient China the technique was believed to balance one’s life force, known as “qi” or “chee” (pronounced “chee”), which flows through pathways in the body. The insertion of needles into these pathways forced the qi to rebalance, alleviating certain causes of pain and illness.

Modern acupuncture owes much to these ancient beliefs, but it has separated the scientific observable benefits from a pseudoscientific claims relating to spirituality. Modern acupuncture relies not on rebalancing your qi, but on the stimulation of nerves, muscles, and connective tissue.

Acupuncture as part of a holistic approach

AccupunctureAt Core Kinetics we offer acupuncture as part of our commitment to providing you with comprehensive physiotherapy options. Acupuncture has long been considered an effective treatment, and by combining it with other techniques like physiotherapy, yoga, Pilates, and massage, Core Kinetics is able to provide you with a comprehensive, personalised wellness plan. All of our acupuncturists are certified by the AFCI (Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute) and the treatment is safe and non-invasive.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very small, thin, flexible needles into specific points throughout the body. Although the insertion of these needles is virtually painless, the process stimulates the body to produce endorphins. These endorphins provide instant pain relief, and have an anti-inflammatory effect without causing any serious pain or damage. After each session all of the needles are safely disposed of while the next patient receives brand new sterilized needles.

The benefits of acupuncture

Acupuncture is a very effective method of treating a number of injuries or issues (particularly when used in conjunction with other techniques). If you suffer from any of the following issues, then you stand to gain a lot from acupuncture:

  • Sports related injuries
  • Muscle pain
  • Muscle tension
  • Back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Neck pain
  • Knee pain
  • Joint pain
  • Nausea
  • Menstrual pain

Additionally, acupuncture may offer some mental health benefits for people suffering from:

  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Anxiety

Perhaps the largest benefit of acupuncture isn’t what it does, but what it doesn’t do. Acupuncture does not require the use of invasive techniques like surgery, or powerful anesthetics or pain medication. Anesthetics and invasive surgery can be highly dangerous, and pain medication is often habit-forming, causing serious negative consequences in patients lives.

Not every issue can be treated with acupuncture and physical therapy alone, but acupuncture has no serious risks, so if you have tried everything, or don’t want to resort to surgery or drugs, consider trying acupuncture.

Is Acupuncture Right for You?

Acupuncture should only be carried out by trained professionals in a sterile environment. If you are suffering from chronic pain or mental illness you should consult your doctor before starting your session, and provide us with your medical history to ensure that the procedure is right for you.
